Luggage Scales - A Necessity For The Modern Day Traveler

The airlines have found themselves in a bit of a quandary. How can they continue to keep the cost of a ticket affordable and still make money despite the rise in fuel and operating costs. One of the ideas they've come up with is charging overweight luggage fees.

Its not unusual for passengers to pay from $50 to over $300 in fees because the luggage they want to check in is overweight.

Here is just a sample of what some of the airlines that service the New York City area are charging passengers for overweight luggage.

American Airlines
  • 51 lbs/24 kgs to 70 lbs/32 kgs - $50 per piece
  • 71 lbs/33 kgs to 99 lbs/44 kgs - $100 per piece
  • Baggage over 100 lbs will not be accepted
Continental
  • 51 lbs/24 kgs to 70 lbs/32 kgs - $50 per piece
  • Baggage over 70 lbs/32 kgs will not be accepted
Delta Airlines
  • 51 lbs/24 kgs to 70 lbs/32 kgs - $90 domestic, $150 outside of the US per piece
  • 71 lbs/33 kgs to 100 lbs/45 kgs - $175 Domestic, $300 outside of the US Per piece
  • Baggage over 100 lbs will not be accepted
Jet Blue
  • 51 lbs/24 kgs to 70 lbs/32 kgs - $50 per piece
  • 71 lbs/33 kgs to 99 lbs/44 kgs - $100 per piece
  • Baggage over 99 lbs will not be accepted

If you want to avoid paying overweight luggage fees in addition to the general baggage fee that most airlines are charging these days purchase a good luggage scale. There are two that I've used that work well for me:
